Work to Live 10/17/2009

For this pair of posters I was looking at what was representative of employment to me and also our attitudes to work in New Zealand and perhaps globally. I was going to look at particular aspects of jobs I've had and the ideal job for me after I graduate. But decided to go with something a bit more general but still personally relevant, so I went with work shirts, the Hare side will be represented by a business shirt and tie which links back to the initial catalyst for my project, the man being hit by the bus. For the tortoise side I have been working on the shirt, which is a shirt of mine, more casual with the sleeves rolled up, reflecting a more casual approach to a creative job.

Thinking about how I felt about the accident and thinking how myself and that man were different and also how my ideals have changed in regards to environmental and sustainability issues. I ride a bike now and have done without a car for about 3.5 years. In the past I couldn't imagine being without my car.

At the start of studying design I only had an interest in carrying on developing my graphic art (graffiti) and didn't really consider the effect graphic designers had on everything from the economy right through to environmental issues. From this I was lead to looking at Slow Design. Looking through their beliefs it all became a bit clearer as to what I should do for my years project.

As a graphic designer I realise the ability I have to change the way people might think, purchase a product, attend an event or moderate behaviour. Signs are all around us and it has even been experimented with, taking away signs on the roads leaves the driver of a vehicle bemused with what to do. They slow down and are more aware of their surroundings. One sign in particular caught my attention because of it's obvious nature. The sign read "DON'T WALK IN FRONT OF MOVING TRAFFIC" you have to have a bit of a laugh, but quite soon after this I saw a man walk in front of a bus. He was a business man, it was 5.00pm Friday and he jumped the pedestrian crossing just as a bus came around the corner. It left me thinking why this happened, it was also the trigger that started me off with my years project. The result of combining these two (the sign and the accident)  I created a 3D chicken looking as though it had been made with the sign.
